Recipe: Sloppy Joe Sauce
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomato
- ½ cup unsalted beef stock (can substitute chicken stock)
- ¼ cup tomato paste
- 2-4 tablespoons brown sugar
- 8 cloves roasted garlic, mashed with fork
- 1 large onion, small dice
- 3-4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1½ cups sweet red peppers, small dice
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon chili powder (add more if you like it spicy)
- 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher or coarse sea salt
- ½ teaspoon crushed black pepper
In a saucepan, heat one to two tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and sweet red peppers. Sauté until they are soft and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Season with a small pinch of salt.
Add the tomato paste, and sauté until it changes color.
Stir in the mashed roasted garlic, chili powder, mustard powder, salt, and pepper - cook for another minute.
Add beef stock and deglaze the pan, loosening all the brown bits.
Add the crushed tomato, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar to the saucepan. Stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Let the sauce simmer gently for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed, adding more sugar or vinegar according to your taste.
Once the sauce is ready, combine with cooked ground beef, turkey, or chicken and make delicious homemade sloppy joes! Just spoon it on your favorite grilled bun or roll and enjoy.
