The Art of Crafting Irresistible Naan Bread in Your Kitchen
What is Naan?
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ⅓ cup plain Greek full-fat yogurt
- 2 tablespoons melted ghee, butter, or extra-virgin olive oil
- ⅔ cup lukewarm water (about 110ºF)
- Optional: minced garlic, chopped cilantro, turmeric, or nigella seeds for flavor variations
In a small bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, and melted ghee, butter, or olive oil.
Mix the ingredients with clean hands until they come together to form a soft dough. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour; if it's too dry, add a splash of water.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 7-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and divide it into 8 equal-sized portions.
Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Coat with a little olive oil.
Roll out each portion of the dough into an oval or round shape, about ⅛ inch thick.
Optional: Sprinkle minced garlic, chopped cilantro, or nigella seeds over the naan for additional flavor.
Reduce heat to medium and place the rolled-out naan on the hot skillet or griddle and cook for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and lightly browned. Watch for it to begin to bubble and puff up.
Brush the cooked naan with melted ghee or butter for a glossy finish.
Repeat the process for the remaining dough portions.
Serve the naan warm and enjoy!

- For a softer texture, use full-fat Greek yogurt in the dough recipe. It adds moisture and tenderness.
- If you prefer a garlic naan variation, simply mix minced garlic with melted butter and brush it over the cooked naan.
- Experiment with different flavors by adding chopped cilantro, nigella seeds, or other herbs and spices to the dough.
- To achieve the authentic tandoor-style taste, consider using a pizza stone or a cast-iron griddle or skillet for cooking your naan.
- If you don't have an immediate need for all the naan you made, freeze the leftovers in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months. Thaw them in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in a hot skillet or oven before serving.
