Grill & Chill: Savor the Flavor of The Ultimate Turkey Burger

Welcome, fellow food enthusiasts, to a mouthwatering journey! Today, I'll be crafting the ultimate turkey burger that is guaranteed to satisfy your cravings for a juicy, flavorful burger. Packed with lean turkey meat and a symphony of delectable toppings, this burger will leave you longing for more.

Ground turkey is an excellent alternative to ground beef, offering several advantages that make it a healthy and delicious choice. In this post, I'll provide a step-by-step guide on creating moist and flavorful grilled turkey burgers.

Why Turkey:

Lean and Healthy: Ground turkey is lower in fat compared to ground beef, making it a healthier option. It contains less saturated fat, making it suitable for those watching their cholesterol intake or trying to maintain a balanced diet.

Versatile and Adaptable: Ground turkey pairs well with a variety of flavors and seasonings, allowing you to create unique and customized burger combinations. Its mild taste serves as a canvas for experimenting with different ingredients.

Creating Moist and Flavorful Grilled Turkey Burgers:

Choose the Right Ground Turkey: Opt for ground turkey that contains only dark meat (thighs). This blend helps maintain moisture and flavor during grilling. If you can find 85/15 ground turkey, it's a plus.

Enhance the Flavor: To ensure a moist and flavorful burger, add ingredients like minced garlic, finely chopped onions, fresh herbs (such as parsley or cilantro), and spices such as paprika, cumin, coriander, or chili powder. These ingredients will infuse your turkey burgers with delicious flavors.

Incorporate Moisture: Ground turkey can sometimes be drier than ground beef, so it's crucial to add moisture to the mixture. You can use ingredients like Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, olive oil, Dijon mustard, or even a dollop of high-quality mayonnaise to improve the moisture content.

Gentle Mixing: Combine all the ingredients gently to avoid over-mixing, which can result in a dense and tough burger. Mix by hand until the ingredients are evenly distributed, but take care not to overwork the meat.

Making the Patties: Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape them into patties, slightly larger than your burger buns, as they tend to shrink during cooking. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up during grilling. Refrigerate for at least 1-hour to allow patties to firm up.

Recipe: The Ultimate Gobblelicious Turkey Burger

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound ground turkey thighs (93-94% lean)
  • ¼ cup grated onion
  • 1-2 cloves garlic, minced (I use a micro-plane)
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh, flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Toppings: lettuce, tomato, avocado, onion, cheese, bacon, etc.
  • Burger buns

Instructions:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, grated onion, minced garlic, Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, fresh parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated, but avoid over-mixing, as it can result in a dense burger.

  2. Divide the turkey mixture into four equal portions. Shape each portion into a patty, ensuring they are slightly larger in diameter than the burger buns, as they will shrink slightly during cooking. Refrigerate for at least 1-hour to allow patties to firm up.

  3. Preheat your grill or stovetop griddle over medium heat. If using a grill, lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

  4. Cook the turkey burgers for about 5-6 minutes per side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Avoid pressing down on the patties while cooking to retain their juiciness. Cooking times may vary, so keep a close eye on them to avoid overcooking.

  5. While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster. This step adds a delightful crunch to your burger experience.

  6. Once the patties are cooked through, remove them from the heat and let them rest for a couple of minutes.

  7. Assemble your turkey burgers by placing a cooked patty on the bottom half of each bun. Top each patty with a slice of cheese*, allowing it to slightly melt from the residual heat.

  8. Layer the burger with your preferred toppings — a lettuce leaf, a juicy tomato slice, sliced avocado, and some thinly sliced red onion are our go-to’s. Feel free to add pickles for an extra tangy crunch!

  9. Finish off your masterpiece by spreading a flavorful aioli (suggestions and recipes below) on the top half of the bun, according to your taste preferences.

  10. Finally, crown your turkey burger with the top bun, press it gently, and get ready to embark on a sensational flavor adventure!

*Notes on cheese — There are several delicious cheeses that can complement a grilled turkey burger. Here are some popular options:

Swiss Cheese: Swiss cheese has a mild, nutty flavor and a smooth texture that pairs well with turkey. It melts beautifully and adds a creamy element to your burger.

Cheddar Cheese: Cheddar is a versatile cheese that works well with many different meats, including turkey. It has a slightly sharp and tangy flavor, which can add some richness to your burger.

Pepper Jack Cheese: If you like a bit of spice, consider using pepper jack cheese. It's a Monterey Jack cheese with added jalapeño peppers, giving it a mild heat that goes well with turkey burgers.

Gouda Cheese: Gouda is a Dutch cheese with a smooth, creamy texture and a slightly sweet and nutty flavor. It melts well and adds a delightful richness to your burger.

Ultimately, the choice of cheese depends on your personal preferences and the flavors you want to incorporate into your turkey burger. Feel free to experiment and find the combination that suits your taste buds best!
